Ibuprofen
Indications/Uses
Relief of fever, pain eg, dental pain & headache. Relief of muscle & joint inflammation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
20-30 mg/kg in divided doses. Childn 10-12 yr 15 mL every 6-8 hr, 7-9 yr 10 mL every 6-8 hr, 4-6 yr 7.5 mL every 6-8 hr, 1-3 yr 5 mL every 6-8 hr. Babies 6-12 mth 2.5 mL every 6-8 hr, 3 to <6 mth, >5 kg 2.5 mL every 6-8 hr.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to aspirin, other NSAIDs or related to previous NSAID therapy. Active or history of peptic ulceration, recurrent peptic ulcer/haemorrhage, varicella infection. History of GI bleeding or perforation. Severe heart, renal or hepatic failure. Last trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Asthma, CV disease, CHF, diuretic-induced vol depletion, collagen disease. SLE & mixed connective tissue disease, history of GI disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease). Discontinue use if vision changes occurs. Cirrhosis, renal insufficiency; hepatic or renal failure. Pregnancy. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Stomach discomfort or pain, nausea, GI intolerance & bleeding, stomach ulcer, activation of peptic ulcer, black tarry stools, rashes or worsening of asthma, liver & kidney problems, headache, dizziness & hearing disturbances; serious skin reactions, some are fatal eg, exfoliative dermatitis, SJS, TEN), severe hypersensitivity reactions, DRESS syndrome, exacerbation of infections in varicella infection, cardiac failure & oedema; haematopoietic disorders.
Drug Interactions
Oral anticoagulants, antihypertensive treatment w/ thiazide diuretics. ACE inhibitors & β-blockers. MTX or lithium, other aspirin, ibuprofen or NSAIDS. Oral corticosteroids, SSRI, anti-platelet agents, cardiac glycosides, ciclosporin, mifepristone, tacrolimus, zidovudine, quinolone antibiotics.
